Description
The Guest House to Bailiffscourt Hotel and Country Club is a guest wing of a large house, built between 1931 and 1935 by architect Amyas Phillips for Lord and Lady Moyne. Designed in a 12th-century style reminiscent of Boothby Pagnell, it is connected to the main house by an underground tunnel. The building is constructed from Cotswold limestone and features a thatched roof with stone chimneystacks.
The T-shaped structure has a north front that resembles a late Norman first-floor hall, featuring a double arched window and an external stone staircase leading to a former arched doorcase, now a window. The ground floor is supported by buttresses. The southwest elevation showcases a restored 12th-century zigzag doorcase and a series of Norman-style windows on the first floor. The southeast elevation combines pebbles and stone.
Inside, the quality of the interior matches that of the main house. The main bedroom boasts a fine double arched braced roof, while another room contains a remarkable 15th-century stone chimneypiece, believed to have originated from a monastery, featuring decorated spandrels with blank shields in quatrefoils and religious emblems. Additionally, there are many other stone fireplaces from the 16th and 17th centuries.
