Description

This is an 18th-century house with a rebuilt front. It is three stories high and constructed of brick laid on a projecting plinth. Moulded strings are present at ground and first floor window head level, with a narrow string at the second floor window head level. A moulded brick cornice and parapet, stepped at its base and recessed over the windows, tops the front. The roof is tiled. The house has three windows, with architrave frames and segmental heads, and keyblocks to the upper floors. The ground floor has two similar windows and a central three-panel door, set within a panelled surround featuring pilasters and a flat hood supported by elaborately carved scroll brackets with grotesque head detail. The flanking lead returns of this hood have angel head ornaments. All windows, doors, hood, and carved brackets are modern reproductions. Wickham House forms a group of considerable group value with Nos 18, 37, 43, 45 and all the listed buildings on the south-east side from Nos 19 to 46 (inclusive), including the wrought-iron screen before Vernon House.
