Description

This barn and waterwheel are likely from the late 18th century, with extensions added in the early 19th century. The structure is built of limestone rubble with some ashlar quoins, and has a concrete roof covered with plain tiles. It is a range of 9 or 10 bays, incorporating a 4-bay barn with entrances on opposite sides, a lower through cartway, an additional bay to the north, and 3 or 4 bays added to the south. A cast-iron waterwheel, partly sunk in a pit and connected to a vertical shaft, is located on the east face, sheltered by a wooden canopy. The waterwheel machinery was installed around 1810 according to designs by J.C. Loudon.
