Description
ROTHERFIELD GREYS SU78SW 6/124 Greys Court, Dower House 24/10/51 (Formerly listed as Greys Court including Batchelors Hall, The Well House, and Towers NE, NW and SW of house) GV I Formerly known as Batchelors Hall. House. C14 tower with C16 house attached, with later alterations. Flint with stone dressings to tower; red brick to house; plain old tile roof; brick stacks. Octagonal tower to right with rectangular-plan house to left. 2 storey, 2-window range to house. 3 storey tower. Slit window to each side of tower to ground and first floor. Single light window to each side of second floor of tower. Crenellated parapet; octagonal pyramidal roof. Central C20 sash door with stone surround with label mould with dropped ends to house. 3-light casements to all openings with stone surrounds with label moulds with dropped ends. Large brick stack at junction of house and tower. Rear: Irregular fenestratiion, 4 cross gables to roof. Interior not inspected. Motto over entrance door: "Melius nil coelibe vita" (Nothing is better than the celibate life). History: Licence to crenellate granted to Sir John de Grey in 1347.
