Description

This is a terrace of four cottages located on St Bernard's Road. Dated 1824 with a stone tablet inscription reading "JAC 1824", the terrace was constructed in the early 19th century and later developed more formally after 1832 by St. John's College.

The cottages are built of red and blue chequer brick, with a flush first-floor band of blue brick headers, and have slate roofs. They are arranged as a terraced row. Each cottage has two storeys and one bay, featuring twelve-pane sash windows and a six-panel door, symmetrically arranged with one door at each end of the range and two in the centre. The windows have colourwashed stone wedge lintels with voussoirs. A glazed name plaque and the date tablet are situated in the centre. The right gable of number 28 was rebuilt in red brick during the 20th century. The rear wall features blue brick diaper patterning, while the first floor has 16-pane sashes. Flat-roofed single-storey extensions project from the rear. Two brick chimneys rise from the ridge of the roof.

The terrace is considered a modest but visually pleasing example of 19th century housing in North Oxford, and is designated at Group Value II, standing within the Walton Manor Conservation Area. Historical documents, including a c.1832 plan from St. John’s College showing allotments assigned to John Callis, are held at the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies.
