Description
32 and 34 New Inn Hall Street is a building consisting of two tenements, likely dating from the 17th century, which was once used as a chapel. The building has undergone alterations since 1821, including the addition of ground floor windows and a chimney stack, and has been converted into a dwelling house. In 1949, it was repaired and the ground floor was covered in stucco. The structure is two stories high, built of rubble, and features a modern red tiled hipped roof with one brick chimney. Both floors have wooden sash windows, with three on the ground floor and two on the first floor. Number 32 has a pedimented wooden door frame with a moulded entablature, while number 34 has a plain doorway. A tablet on the building commemorates John Wesley's preaching in 1783 at what was the first Oxford Methodist Meeting House. For the exterior as it appeared in 1821, reference can be made to a drawing by J C Buckler in the Bodleian Library.
