Description

The building at 16-18 Plantation Road is a semi-detached pair of small houses dating from 1884, designed by H.W. Moore. The houses are built of red brick with flush ashlar dressings, and have hipped plain tile roofs with terracotta ball finials and a central brick stack.

The two-storey houses each feature a canted bay window that rises through the eaves to a steep hipped roof. These bay windows have sash windows with glazing bars and ashlar surrounds. The ground-floor lintel above the doorway extends to either side, incorporating a small corner buttress. The plank doors have narrow strip over-lights.

Historically, Plantation Road was originally two separate lanes serving small enclosures on the Tagg's Garden plantation, before Oxford's 1832 enclosure. The houses were designed as workers' cottages and originally comprised a living room, washroom, pantry, and a winder stair leading to three bedrooms. They were built alongside the contemporary terraced row at 2-14, also designed by Moore for the Oxford Cottage Improvement Society.

The pair’s architectural interest and philanthropic housing enterprise give it considerable importance, enhanced by their group value. They are situated within the Walton Manor Conservation Area.
