Description

Building No. 135 is a special repair bay shed constructed in 1938 by the Air Ministry's Directorate of Works and Buildings, to drawing number 1368/38. The building is located on the Technical Site at RAF Bicester, which was separated from the Domestic Site and retains many original buildings, primarily from 1926 with further additions during the expansion period of the 1930s.

The shed is built of brick with a slate gabled roof. It has a rectangular plan and a four-bay front, articulated by concrete columns with original half-glazed folding doors. The building is situated close to the main Motor Transport (MT) group and represents an unusually complete example of a 1930s technical building.

RAF Bicester is the best-preserved of the bomber bases constructed during the expansion of the Royal Air Force from 1923, reflecting a philosophy of offensive deterrence. It retains layout and fabric relating to both pre-1930 military aviation and the development of Britain’s strategic bomber force, demonstrating the influence of domestic political pressures and world events up to 1939. During the Second World War, RAF Bicester functioned as an Operational Training Unit, training air crews from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Britain for service in Bomber Command, enabling bomber crews to train as units after individual skills training. The grass flying field remains with boundaries largely intact, surrounded by bomb stores and airfield defences. Further historical details can be found in descriptions of Buildings Nos 79 and 137 (Type 'A' Hangars).
