Description
A pair of cottages, likely dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century when they were divided into separate dwellings, and further damage occurred in a fire in 1988. The ground floor is constructed with Flemish bond red brick, featuring burnt headers and multiple phases of construction, while the timber frame above is clad with peg-tile. A brick stack and chimneyshaft are visible. The roof is covered with peg-tiles and is half-hipped at both ends, containing two dormer windows with hipped roofs.
The cottages appear to have originated as a three-room farmhouse facing south-southwest. The left-hand room (west) was originally unheated, serving as a service room. An axial stack between rooms provided back-to-back fireplaces. The original front lobby entrance was blocked when the house was divided, and new doorways were added.
The cottages are two storeys high, with attic space in the roof, and likely feature rear lean-to outshots. The front elevation is irregular, with 20th-century casement windows without glazing bars. A central doorway contains a 20th-century plank door, and a similar door is located around the corner on the right-hand end wall of the other cottage. The chimneyshaft includes older brickwork, possibly dating from the 17th century. The interior was not accessible for inspection.
