Description
The garden wall, built around 1829 to 1833, was designed by George Ledwell Taylor, the architect for the Navy Board, and John Rennie Snr, an engineer. Constructed from yellow stock brick with an ashlar coping, it encloses the northern side of the former Officers' rear garden. The wall features a doorway on the northern side topped with a ball finial and is associated with the former dockyard perimeter wall. Historically, Rennie's model of the dockyard indicates that each house had its own garden, with a potential coach house at the southern end. Unlike other Royal dockyards, Sheerness was completely rebuilt at once, and this wall is part of the well-preserved southeast corner of Rennie's planned layout, which includes the entrance, chapel, and officers' accommodation, representing a unique early 19th-century dockyard design.
