Description
Luddesdown Court is probably an early 13th-century hall and service wing, constructed with flint and stone dressings, and featuring a 17th-century brick extension to the east. The roof is now tiled, but is of more recent construction. The building is L-shaped and two storeys high.
The hall occupies the first floor and is supported by massive oak joists resting on a medial beam, which stands on two oak posts. There are five windows facing south and five facing west. The only surviving original windows are narrow loops on the west side and a fragment of a two-light window with a central column in the south-west corner. Originally, the hall was entered by a door in the north external wall; it is now accessed by a late 13th-century door in the east wall. The service wing terminates in a recently restored garderobe, which was later used as a dove cot. A chamber is formed at the east end of the hall, separated by a wooden partition. This chamber contains a 14th-century hooded fireplace with a stone bressummer. Wall paintings and graffiti are also present in this chamber. 19th-century additions are located in the north-east angle of the house.
