Description
The K6 telephone box, designed by the architect Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935, is a notable example of British design. This particular kiosk is made of cast iron and glass and features two glazed sides and a glazed door. The design includes narrow panes flanking a wider central panel of horizontal panes, all topped with a domical roof. Above each side's glazed panel is a relief crown, with the word "TELEPHONE" displayed below.
The K6 was created to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and is an evolution of Scott's earlier K2 design from 1924. It is significant for its architectural quality as an industrially produced object for mass communication, with around 70,000 units produced in total. This intact K6 telephone box is prominently located at the corner of Red Lion Square, enhancing the area’s character. It is situated within a conservation area and has a strong visual connection to three nearby Grade II listed buildings.
