Description
The dovecot located to the south-west of Hawley Manor is a notable structure, dated 1556 on its north-west gable, although it is likely from the 17th century. The date is not visible in a photograph taken in 1890. This large square pigeon house is constructed of red brick in English Bond and features a pyramidal roof covered with old tiles, which has curved gables on three sides. At the top, there is an elaborate glazed louvre with an ogee-shaped tiled canopy and pendants that were renewed in 1922. The eaves cornice is moulded wood. Inside, the dovecot contains 549 nesting boxes, along with two wooden beams fitted with pegs for accessing the nesting holes, and a smaller ladder for reaching the roof area. This structure is a fine example of a brick dovecot.
