Description

Mystole House, originally called Mystole House and built in the early 18th century by Charles Fagge, stands on the site of a 16th-century house constructed by John Bungey, Prebendary of Christ Church, Canterbury. The principal facade faces north and comprises two storeys, attics, and cellars. The house is built of red brick with a hipped tiled roof and a wooden modillion eaves cornice. Nine sash windows with intact glazing bars are present. The central three-window section projects and features a pediment with consoles below the modillions and an attic window within the tympanum, topped by a curved brick pediment. A central doorcase features fluted Doric pilasters, a triglyph frieze, a pediment, and a semi-circular fanlight. A two-window ground floor addition exists at the west end, surmounted by a parapet with a ball capital at its outer angle, and incorporates a round-headed doorway with a six-panelled door. The east front was altered in 1895 by Sir R Blomfield and now displays six windows and five pedimented dormers, differing from its original three windows and two dormers. Modern bay windows have been added to the north end, on both ground and first floors, along with a central modern projection featuring a large attic storey. Adjacent to this is a further modern addition mirroring the original section and incorporating a bay window. To the west are service portions, likely dating to the 17th century and known as the West Wing. The interior includes panelling and marble fireplaces.
