Description

The building consists of former pigsties, an attached farmyard wall, and a gate pier located to the southwest of the ragstone barn at Pevington Farm. These structures date from the early 19th century. The pigsties are constructed from Kentish ragstone rubble and brick, topped with hipped tiled roofs.

The layout features a range of five pigsties arranged from north to south, with an attached farmyard wall and a gate pier at the southeast. The pigsties are single-storey, built of Kentish ragstone rubble with red brick dressings, and have entrances on the east side. The southeast side includes a curved section of Kentish ragstone rubble wall with red brick quoins and stone coping, which was originally part of an enclosed farmyard. The early 19th-century square brick pier, built in Flemish bond, has a projecting brick course near the top and a pyramidal stone cap, serving as one of the gate piers for access to the farmyard.

Historically, Pevington Farm was an ancient manor granted to Bishop Odo of Bayeux after the Norman Conquest and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Since 1612, it has been part of the Dering estate. The pigsties, along with most of the farm buildings at Pevington Farm, are depicted on the 1871 Ordnance Survey map.

These pigsties are significant as a largely intact example of early 19th-century purpose-built structures, representing a rare building type in Kent. They contribute to a well-preserved farm group on a historic site, which includes other listed buildings, and the attached wall and gate pier form part of an enclosed farmyard.
