Description
Old Thatch is a 16th-century timber-framed hall-house located on North Street in Hellingly. The north wall displays exposed timbering with plaster infilling, while the ground floor is refronted with red brick and grey headers, and the upper floor is tile-hung. The house features a steeply-pitched tiled roof that is hipped at the south end. The main front has modern casement windows and a modern porch, along with a large brick chimney stack. The north gable end is jettied and includes a wooden oriel window on the first floor, which has wooden mullions, a transom, and diamond-shaped panes, likely dating from around 1580. Inside, there is a rare lap-boarded oak dais reredos in its original position, and the oak tie-beam is decorated with mouldings and decorative pendants at either end.
