Description
The Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene is a Grade I listed building located in Wartling Village. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a tiled roof. The church comprises a chancel, a south transept, a nave with a north aisle, and small weather-boarded bell-turret at the west end, along with north and south porches. The chancel and nave date back to the 13th century, while the east wall of the chancel and its buttresses were rebuilt around 1800. The north aisle is from the 14th century, and it is likely that the bell-turret, which is weather-boarded and topped with a shingled spire featuring a weather-vane dated 1781, also dates from this period. The south aisle was added in the 15th century, and the south porch is dated 1737, while the north porch is from the 19th century. Inside, the chancel houses a monument by John Bacon dedicated to a member of the Curteis family of Windmill Hill Place. The church also features an 18th-century pulpit and box pews, along with late Georgian wall tablets commemorating the Curteis family.
