Description
Forge Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, which was refronted and extended in the early 19th century. It features a timber-framed structure with an end chimneystack, refronted in red brick with grey headers. The roof is tiled, hipped to the northeast, and includes a former external chimneystack made of 17th-century brickwork, now integrated into later brickwork on the southeast side.
The building has two storeys and four irregularly spaced windows. The front windows are early 19th-century 16-pane sashes, some with horns, set in moulded wooden architraves with cambered heads on the ground floor. There is a 19th-century porch on the right side, featuring a round-headed arch and a half-glazed door. The early 19th-century extension at the rear has two gables, with some 16-pane sashes and some 20th-century casements. A triangular brick buttress supports the external chimneystack.
Inside, the former external rear wall displays exposed box-framing. There is an open fireplace with a wooden bressumer, along with exposed chamfered spine beams and floor joists. The first floor retains 17th-century floorboards and a 19th-century firegrate. The roof structure includes angled queen struts with through purlins, original rafters, and a lath and plaster partition.
