Description

The Old Rectory is a former vicarage, now a house, dating to 1859. It was designed by Samuel Sanders Teulon, who also designed the adjoining church and school. The building is constructed in red brick in Flemish bond, with stone dressings and polychrome brickwork. It is built in an asymmetrical Gothic style, with a tiled roof featuring bands of curved tiles and five brick chimney stacks.

The north-west, or entrance, front is two storeys and includes a left-side gable and a pointed two-light oriel with a lead roof. Below the oriel is an arched doorcase with corbel heads and colonnettes. To the right of the oriel is an arched staircase window, stepped at the bottom with a paired lancet window below. At the extreme right is an external brick chimney stack with a stone arched feature including a carved dragon’s head. A two-storey link block connects to the main building, featuring a right-side single arched mullioned and transomed window and a first-floor two-light mullioned and transomed window, alongside a ground-floor triple mullioned and transomed window. A service wing to the extreme north-west bears the lettering “AD 1859” and the initials “VR” and “PC” in polychrome brickwork, along with arched windows. The first-floor elevation has two gables, the left of which is larger than the right; the left displays a triple mullioned and transomed window to the first floor, with a three-light bay to the ground floor, while the right has a double mullioned and transomed window on both floors. A corner octagonal turret features arched windows, an arched doorcase, and a lead and metal finial. The south-west front has an external chimney stack with polychrome decoration, a large gable with a triple arched mullioned and transomed window, a link block with a dormer incorporating a double mullioned and transomed window, and ground floor double arched windows. A single-storey lean-to service wing features diaper and cross decoration in polychrome brickwork and an arched doorcase.

The interior includes an oak staircase in a Jacobean style, with splat balusters. Further internal features may exist.
