Description
The Staplecross War Memorial is located at the junction of Forge Lane and Northiam Road. Made of Portland stone and standing approximately 3 meters high, it features a tapered stone column topped with a lion lying down and baring its teeth. Beneath the lion is a small county shield.
The inscription "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE" is incised below the lion. The main dedicatory inscription, carved in relief on the front face of the column, reads: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THE PARISH/ OF EWHURST/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918./ (21 NAMES)." Below this, a later addition states: "ALSO IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL/ IN THE SECOND GREAT WAR 1939-1945/ (9 NAMES)."
The memorial is surrounded by a small paved area defined by a chain held up by four low stone pillars.
