Description

Anvil Cottage is a late mediaeval cottage with later alterations. Originally built as a detached kitchen at the rear of Slatters, it was later incorporated into the rear wing and is now a separate dwelling. The front and side are timber-framed and underbuilt in 19th-century brick; the front is tile-hung above, while the sides and rear are rendered. The roof is a plain tile hipped roof with a short ridge, and there's a brick stack at the rear. The cottage has two storeys and two timber-framed bents with some upper tension, braces visible internally, and a central angle braced truss. The front has two windows and a central, single-storey 20th-century hipped roof entrance porch. The front door has a glazed upper panel with glazing bars. There are casements with bars to either side, while the upper floor has a double casement to the left and a single casement above the porch. There are 20th-century casements to the side and rear. The cottage is significant as an example of a formerly detached mediaeval timber-framed kitchen and for its group value.
