Description
This is a row of 18th-century houses located on the east side of High Street. The houses are constructed of red brick, with a cement ground floor. They have five double-hung sash windows, set in surrounds with modern segmental-headed architraves, plus one dummy window. The doorways differ in detail: number 38 features an architrave, brackets with guttae and a hood; number 39 has pilasters, carved brackets, a hood and a traceried fanlight; and number 40 has a 19th-century shop front. A brick modillion cornice runs along the top of the building, and the roof is covered in old tiles with 19th-century cresting. At the rear of number 40 is a two-story, weatherboarded wing with a hipped roof and four flush sashes. The row of houses, numbers 38 to 43, are considered to form a group.
