Description
The group of four churchyard tombs located to the east of the Church of St Mary dates from between about 1790 and 1840 and is made of Portland stone. Three of the tombs are arranged side by side in a row from north to south along Chain Street.
The northernmost tomb, erected around 1800, is dedicated to members of the Newberry family. It has a rectangular shape with panelled sides on a moulded base and features a flat projecting lid.
The central tomb, commemorating members of the Deane family, was erected around 1790, with inscriptions added in 1810. It is also rectangular in shape, with panelled sides on a moulded base and a flat projecting lid, although the lid is badly damaged.
The southernmost tomb, dedicated to Thomas Snowden and his family, was erected around 1796, with inscriptions added until 1829. This tomb is rectangular, stands on a slightly taller base, and includes fluted corner balusters, York stone tablets, and a flat projecting lid. The iron railings that once surrounded it have been removed.
A fourth tomb is located further west, immediately south of a large plain tree. This rectangular chest tomb, dating from around 1836, has an illegible dedication. It features corner piers with cable mouldings and a flat top.
