Description
This is a section of boundary wall to Tipner Magazine, constructed between 1789 and 1800. It is located at Tipner Point, near Portsmouth. The wall is built of red brick in English bond and stands approximately 3 metres high. It extends for roughly 30 metres to the south west corner of the magazine itself. The wall incorporates recessed panels topped with a brick dentil course, followed by four full courses, and finished with a round brick capping. This boundary wall originally protected the landward side of the magazine, with the other sides being naturally defended by the sea.
The construction was prompted by concerns regarding the vulnerability of gunpowder stores and the invasion scare of 1779. Following a plan by the Master-General of the Board of Ordnance, land at Tipner Point was acquired between 1789 and 1791. The magazine initially held gunpowder for restoration and later served as a storage facility. During the mid-19th century, accommodation was expanded in line with a report by Lord Panmure. After 1890, when the ordnance depots were divided between the Army and Navy, the magazine was converted for general ordnance storage, and iron doors were inserted.
