Description

Ningwood Manor House is a manor house, now a private residence. The rear wing dates from around 1650, while the main part of the house was built around 1784 by John Pinhorn, with an early 19th-century extension at the back. The south front, dating to around 1780, is constructed of coursed stone rubble with ashlar dressings and rusticated quoins. It features a slate roof with an end stone chimney stack, two storeys, and five windows. The windows are 12-pane sashes with horns. The central doorway has a wooden Tuscan portico and a six-panelled door, accessed by a flight of five stone steps. There is a moulded stone eaves cornice and a distinctive balustrade with three fluted urns, the central urn adorned with swags, along with four sections of balustrading and two sections featuring chinoiserie panels.

At the rear, there are stone rubble wings with hipped tiled roofs, the left section having a stone plinth. The first floor includes one 12-pane sash window, one triple casement, a double casement, and a 19th-century casement on the ground floor. The central part of the rear is recessed, featuring two 12-pane sashes on the first floor and two 16-pane sashes on the ground floor. Inside, there is a staircase from around 1784 with three turned balusters on each step and a plastered soffit.

Ningwood Manor House is one of the original Domesday Manors. In the 12th century, it was transferred to the Priory of Christchurch and remained a monastic grange until 1536. In 1784, John Pinhorn Esq., a banker from London and originally from Newport, constructed the south wing.
