Description

This is a terrace of houses built between 1830 and 1832, designed by C.A. Busby. The buildings are constructed of stucco over brick, with the roofs hidden behind a parapet. The terrace stands adjacent to the east return of 33-42 Brunswick Terrace. Nos. 1 to 7 consist of four storeys over a basement. No. 1 has a double bow front with five windows, while the others each have a single bow with a three-window facade. The windows are mostly sash windows lacking glazing bars. The buildings have a parapet with a balustrade (now missing from No. 1), a cornice, string courses, and rusticated ground floors. First-floor balconies are made of cast iron: No. 3 has original cast-iron balconies, while Nos. 5 and 7 have replacement wrought-iron balconies. The central entrance to No. 1 has double doors leading to a flight of steps. The other entrances are on the right side of the building, facing uphill and away from the sea, and consist of unusual porches supported by piers topped with busts of philosophers or bearded men, with an egg-and-dart moulded abacus supporting a broad entablature with a dentil moulded cornice. Original six-panel doors are found at Nos. 5 and 7, while No. 3 has a 20th-century door, all accessed by short flights of steps. Cast-iron railings extend from the entrances along the street frontage.
