Description
The war memorial in Pinner was designed by Sir Bertram Mackennal and completed in 1921. It is made of buff Derbyshire sandstone and stands on a granite base, featuring bronze inscription tablets. Each side of the square shaft has a raised cross, topped with a wreath and fillets. The shaft has a shallow pyramidal top and rests on a five-stage stepped base, with the second highest stage being loped and the lowest made of granite. The main inscription reads, "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM PINNER WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914-1919. IT IS BETTER FOR US TO DIE IN BATTLE THAN TO BEHOLD THE CALAMITY OF OUR PEOPLE." The memorial was unveiled on January 16, 1921, by Major-General Lord Cheylesmore, who was the chairman of the Middlesex Territorial Association.
