Description
Byron House, together with No. 29, is a late 18th-century building situated on Byron Hill Road in Harrow-on-the-Hill. The principal facade of the building faces away from the road. It is constructed of purple/yellow stock brick with a rebuilt red brick parapet, and extends to three storeys and five bays. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, set within gauged flat arches. A Doric pilastered doorcase includes a triglyph frieze. A two-bay, three-storey extension of the 19th century is present to the right-hand side. A copper-roofed timber verandah extends across the front, featuring a central bay window. The interior was remodelled in the early 20th century and the main entrance has been repositioned on the south-east side. The house was the home of Matthew Arnold from 1868 to 1873.
