Description
The lych gate to the Church of St John The Baptist's Churchyard is a late medieval structure, likely dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century, although it has been largely renewed except for the main beam. It is constructed of timber and features a tiled roof supported at each end by a vertical strut and two cross struts resting on a ground plate. The church itself was built by Sir Henry Heydon, who died in 1504, suggesting that the lych gate may have been constructed around the same time. A measured drawing from 1935 in the National Monuments Record may relate to its restoration. This lych gate is recognized as a rare surviving example of its kind, which contributes to its designation as a Grade II* listed structure.
