Description

The water trough outside the former White Horse Public House is a Grade II listed structure. It is a cattle trough that features a human drinking fountain at one end, made of granite. The trough is long and rectangular, supported by granite blocks, although one of these supports is missing. In front of the trough, there are low bollards along the roadside. One end of the trough has an ogee-shaped granite gable, with a semi-circular bowl attached for the drinking fountain. An inscription on the side of the trough reads 'METROPOLITAN / DRINKING FOUNTAIN & CATTLE TROUGH / ASSOCIATION'. Currently, the cattle trough is being used as a planting bed.

The Metropolitan Drinking Fountain Association was established in 1859 by Samuel Gurney MP. In 1867, in response to growing national concern for animal welfare, the Association began installing water troughs for cattle, which is when 'Cattle Trough' was added to its name.

This late 19th or early 20th century cattle trough, erected by the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association, is an attractive piece of street furniture that retains its three functions: cattle trough, dog trough, and drinking fountain, and it is likely still in its original location.
