Description

The Royal Naval Asylum, located on St John's Road in Penge, consists of almshouses for the widows of naval officers. Founded by Queen Adelaide in memory of William IV around 1837, the buildings are designed in the Tudor Gothic style. They are constructed of red brick featuring a diaper pattern of grey headers and have slate roofs topped with groups of octagonal red brick chimneys. The windows are casement style, and the doorways are 4-centred with carved spandrels. The complex is arranged in three blocks of two storeys, forming three sides of a courtyard. The central block has six windows and six gables, while each side block has three windows and three gables. The Royal Arms of William IV is prominently displayed in the centre.
