Description

The Millbank Barracks North West Range, formerly known as the Married Quarters for the Royal Army Medical Corps, was built around 1898 by the Royal Engineers. This impressive structure is made of red brick with Portland stone quoins and dressings, topped with a gabled slate roof featuring banded brick stacks. It has a rectangular plan and stands four storeys tall.

The southeast elevation showcases a principal facade with a pedimented two-window outer blocks and a three-window central block, all featuring rusticated ground floors. These blocks are connected by five-window inner ranges that have a dentilled cornice. The upper floors are adorned with 6/6-pane sash windows, which are pedimented and set in Gibbs surrounds on the first floor. Flanking the central block are large octagonal stair towers with unique designs, topped with cupolas that have dentilled cornices and crown finials. The ground floor windows have radial heads and are set behind a rusticated stone arcade, which supports full-height balconies leading to the apartments, carried on Doric and Ionic columns, with a plain iron balustrade on the upper floor. The returns also feature similar rustication and window treatments.

The married quarters and barrack blocks enclose the north-facing parade ground. Drawings for these quarters were signed by CM Watson, the Inspector General of Fortifications, in 1898. It is likely, though not confirmed, that these barracks were built to accommodate personnel linked to the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital, which opened in 1905 on the northern part of the former Millbank Penitentiary site. The architectural quality and planning of these quarters are more elaborate than other contemporary designs, with the exception of the notable Peninsula Barracks in Winchester.
