Description

This building is a block of flats with a shop and bank, constructed between 1894 and 1896 by H.C. Boyes. It is part of the Grosvenor Estate’s redevelopment of the area in the late 19th century. The building is red brick with stone dressings and a slate roof, built in a Shavian Queen Anne style. It is four storeys high, with a basement, gabled attics, and two tiers of dormers, and is five windows wide above the ground floor. The original stone-framed shop fronts are present on Nos. 11 and 12, although a later shop front replaces the original on No. 10. Paired entrances to Nos. 11 and 12 are grouped to the right and feature oculus fanlights, one with a broken pediment hood. Upper floors include casemented, flat-fronted oriels rising through three storeys, their segmental pediments interrupting a boldly modillioned main cornice. Above the cornice, which is finished with a crowning balustrade, the centre and end oriels are topped by Dutch gables with small segmental pediments. A prominent ribbed and corniced chimney stacks are visible. There’s a shallow, balustraded balcony on the first floor, supported by robust, garlanded console brackets. Cast iron area railings are also present.
