Description

This is a terrace of houses built in the early to mid-19th century, originally part of the layout of Bayswater and formerly known as Grand Junction Road. The terrace is constructed of brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with some areas reddened. The ground floor is stuccoed, with the outer bays featuring channelled stucco. Stucco dressings are used throughout. The terrace is four storeys high with a basement.

The original design was symmetrical. The central section originally advanced forward with 16 bays, but two bays on the left side have been replaced by 20th-century buildings, and two bays of the left wing were rebuilt in the 20th century adjoining the central breakforward. Further breakforwards are present, ten bays at each side, with the final two bays breaking forward again. The central breakforward features projecting Ionic porches and round-arched windows, some of which retain sashes with margin lights. Most of the outer bays have pilastered entrances with overlights and sashes, some with margin lights. Number 166 now has a bank front with sashes and a pilastered round-arched entrance, which is currently blocked with a 20th-century window, and a modillioned fascia. A return entrance to London Street is also present.

Iron balconies are present on the first floor, except for a somewhat altered stucco balustrade on the central range. The windows are a mix of casements and sashes, some with glazing bars in the architraves. There are hoods on consoles to the centre range and pediments over two bays at each end. The third floor has a sill band that acts as a cornice to the centre range, with a further cornice to the parapet. Original iron basement railings remain.
