Description
The Royal College of Surgeons is an institutional headquarters located at 39 to 43 Lincoln's Inn Fields in the City of Westminster. It was rebuilt between 1835 and 1839 by Charles Barry, incorporating elements from George Dance the younger's original college built from 1806 to 1813, including the portico. The building underwent further alterations with attic storeys and wings added in 1888-89 by Stephen Salter, along with heavy upper angle pavilions constructed in 1937. It features a combination of Portland stone and brick with a slate roof, showcasing a modified version of Barry-Dance Neo-classicism.
The structure consists of three storeys, a basement, and two attic storeys, with a facade that is 13 windows wide. A central hexastyle giant Ionic portico, with fluted columns designed by Barry, supports an entablature and frames the central entrance and flanking windows. The windows are recessed sashes set within architraves, and giant pilasters were added to the wings, along with circular attic windows designed by Salter.
Inside, the building retains Barry's vestibule, which is articulated by Greek Doric columns, and features a fine library with fitted bookcases, divided by pilasters, and a gallery with a cast iron balustrade. The inner hall contains a statue of John Hunter created by Weekes in 1864, while the corridor displays busts of Baillie by Nollekens and of John Hunter by Flaxman from 1805.
