Description

Nos 1 to 18 York Terrace East is a long terrace block built around 1820-1826 by John Nash as part of his Regent's Park Crown Estate development. The building is made of stucco with slate roofs and features a balanced "palace" block design, similar to York Terrace West, and is adorned with the same Illissian Ionic giant order as York Gate. The entrances are located at the rear to maintain the "palace" illusion towards the park.

The terrace consists of four storeys, including an attic storey. A central pedimented hexastyle pavilion is flanked by plain brick ranges with 15 windows above a Doric colonnaded loggia. This loggia ends in projecting five-window pavilions featuring the Ionic order in antis. The ground floors of the pavilions have channelled sections with semicircular arched windows that are recessed for one order. The Greek Doric colonnaded loggia has a balustraded balcony parapet that screens the ground floor windows of the link ranges, and this parapet continues over the pavilions. The upper floors have plain recessed sash windows.

The central pavilion includes single pilasters flanking the bays next to the hexastyle portico, and the giant order in antis on the end pavilions creates a two-storey loggia in front of the windows. There is a continuous entablature above the second floor, and the attic windows of the pavilions have semicircular arched windows between pilaster strips, with a continuous attic cornice and blocking course.

The York Gate return features a giant porch with a semicircular arched doorway in a pedimented surround, which was originally a gatekeeper's lodge. The plain brick rear elevation has a built-out stucco screen wall containing doorways framed by piers with Soanian incised Greek fret panels and block cornices.
