Description

Nos 42 to 48 York Terrace East is a terrace of modest 4th rate houses built around 1822 by Decimus Burton. These houses served as service accommodation for John Nash's Regent's Park scheme, located near the former York Baths. The buildings have a stucco facade and brick rear, with slate roofs. Despite their small scale, they present a unified and monumental appearance, highlighted by a central slightly recessed portico of the former Baths and slightly advanced end pavilions.

The terrace consists of two storeys with dormered mansards and low attic storeys in the end pavilions, all built over basements. Each house front has three windows, with one window in the end pavilions and three-window returns. The ground floor features Graeco-Egyptian eared architraves with cornices above the sashes and former doorways, while the first floor has plain sashes, all with glazing bars. The end pavilions include small horizontal rectangular tripartite attic windows.

The recessed portico is hexastyle, supported by giant Ionic columns and topped with a pediment. There is a crowning entablature with a balustraded parapet situated between the portico and the end pavilions, along with spearhead area railings.
