Description

Stanford's, at Nos. 12 to 14 Long Acre, including No. 27A Floral Street, is a commercial building dating from approximately 1900 to 1901, designed by Herbert Read and Macdonald. It is an example of eclectic Flemish Renaissance style, constructed from red brick with stone dressings, and featuring a stone-faced ground and first floor.

The building is four storeys high with an attic set within a crowning gable, and has a broad front of three windows. The ground floor features a double shop front with a central entrance. This is flanked by engaged Doric columns and enriched architrave display windows, all set under an entablature. Upper-floor windows are mainly four-light leaded casements with enriched stone surrounds, mullions and transoms. The first and second floors have paired pilasters and quoins, and the central window bay projects, culminating in a semi-elliptical pediment with reliefs in the tympanum. This depicts a globe flanked by putti with a cartouche inscribed "E.D. 1900". Decorative aprons display the name “STANFORD” on the first floor, and a Royal Coat of Arms on the second floor. The attic storey is framed and finished with a stone-dressed Dutch gable. The building extends to Floral Street, where a plain warehouse elevation is visible.

A wall-mounted Grosvenor gas lantern is located on the Rose Street elevation, featuring twin pilots, a four-mantle burner, and a vitreous enamel reflector, with a flat-plate bracket decorated with a single 's' curl.
