Description
These are symmetrical terraces of town houses, built in 1836 by John Crake. They are located on Hyde Park Gardens in London, comprising numbers 1 to 24. The buildings are stucco faced with slate roofs, and were designed to have entrances facing north, but their principal front looks south over a private, landscaped garden and onto Hyde Park.
The terraces consist of two adjoining ranges, each four storeys high with basements and dormered mansards. Originally, each block had three windows wide. The north-facing entrance fronts feature full-height projecting bays with engaged Greek Doric porches. The windows are architraved sashes, some of which retain their original glazing bars. Plat bands and entablatures run along the third floor and are topped with parapets and coping. Cast iron area railings are also present.
The south front, which faces the park, has slightly advanced end pairs and a central grouping of three houses within each range. The ground, first and second floor windows have architraved surrounds with cornices, and those on the end houses and central grouping have pediments above. Plat bands and an entablature mark the level of the third floor. The link houses have balustraded parapets. The central houses of each range originally featured tent-roofed verandah-balconies on the first floor. Steps with geometrically patterned cast iron railings provide access to the private garden. The roofline is characterized by party wall-mounted, stucco, corniced chimney stacks.
These terraces were part of the Tyburnia development, initially planned in 1827 by S.P. Cockerell for the Bishop of London's Estate (the Church Commissioners). The layout was later modified by Cockerell's successor, G Gutch.
