Description
No. 4 Cheyne Walk is a Grade II* listed building dating from 1718. It has four storeys, a basement, and dormers, with a total of four windows. The building is constructed of brown brick and features an added upper storey with a battlemented parapet. There is a band at the third floor sills and a moulded cornice band at the second floor, flanked by red brick. The ground and first floors are adorned with Doric pilasters, while plain brick piers are present above. The windows have red segmental arches with dressings and stone keys, and they are fitted with flush framed sashes that include glazing bars. The entrance has a wooden doorcase with fluted Corinthian pilasters, a moulded architrave that sweeps up in the center, carved brackets, and a hood. A tablet from the London County Council commemorates the residence of George Eliot, the novelist who died here in 1880.
