Description

ISLINGTON

TQ3282SW OLD STREET 635-1/75/675 (North side) 29/09/72 Railings and gates around St Luke's churchyard

GV II

Churchyard railings and gates. c.1852. Brick and cast iron. The railings surround the churchyard on four sides, and are set on a low brick wall which was probably originally faced with panels of cast iron; these survive on most of the Old Street front. On that front the railings have palmette finials with fluted standards of the same design; mid-rail with half-height railings; gate-piers to east and west end formed of four clustered standards to either side with lamp standards superimposed, two standards missing to east gate-pier; both gates at the west end carry shields lettered 'ST.LUKE. MIDDLESEX. A.D.1852.' On Helmet Row, Ironmonger Row and Mitchell Street the railings are plainer. Gate-piers formed of clustered standards in Helmet Row and Mitchell Row. Scrolled brackets throughout.
