Description
The railings and gates around St Luke's churchyard date from around 1852 and are made of brick and cast iron. They enclose the churchyard on all four sides, resting on a low brick wall that was likely originally faced with cast iron panels, which still exist on most of the Old Street side. On this side, the railings feature palmette finials and fluted standards of the same design, with a mid-rail and half-height railings. The gate-piers at the east and west ends consist of four clustered standards on either side, topped with lamp standards, although two standards are missing from the east gate-pier. Both gates at the west end display shields inscribed with 'ST.LUKE. MIDDLESEX. A.D.1852.' The railings along Helmet Row, Ironmonger Row, and Mitchell Street are simpler in design, with gate-piers formed of clustered standards in Helmet Row and Mitchell Row. Scrolled brackets are present throughout the railings.
