Description
This is a row of four irregular terraced houses with later shops, located on Heath Street in Camden. Numbers 70 and 72 date from around 1740 to 1760 and were originally a single house. They are built of painted brick and have a 20th-century tiled mansard roof with dormers. Number 70 has four windows, and Number 72 has two. Both have 20th-century shopfronts, with Number 70 featuring a Regency-style front. The windows are recessed sashes with gauged brick flat arches, while Number 72 has a late 20th-century shopfront. Both have parapets.
Number 74 dates to the early 18th century and was refronted in the early/mid 19th century. It is constructed of red stock brick and has an old tiled roof with a dormer. The house is two storeys high with an attic and has two windows. It has a 20th-century shopfront, but retains earlier fascia brackets. The windows are architraved two-pane sashes, and there is a simple parapet.
Number 76 dates from the early/mid 18th century and was refronted in the early 19th century. It is built of painted brick and has a pantiled roof. The house is three storeys high and has a 20th-century shopfront. The windows are recessed sashes with gauged brick flat arches. The second floor windows are set within a shallow, round-arched recess, and the building is topped with a parapet.
The interiors of numbers 74 and 76 retain some timber-framing and open truss roofs, reflecting the vernacular style of the pre-19th century village of Hampstead. The houses together form a strong architectural group and demonstrate group value through their collective architectural merit and historical significance.
