Description
The Church of All Hallows War Memorial is a First World War memorial from 1918, located outside the Church of All Hallows, which is a Grade II*-listed building. It is positioned near the entrance at the north-west corner of the church site.
The memorial features a tall wooden Calvary cross that is incised on the face and topped with a gabled canopy. A bronze sculpture of Christ on the cross is placed on the north-west face. The cross-shaft is elaborately moulded and ends in a bracketed base. This base sits atop a four-sided limestone plinth that has a chamfered octagonal top with curved concave corners. The chamfered sides of the octagonal top are decorated with relief-carved motifs. The plinth is raised on a two-stepped, octagonal stone base.
The north-west face of the plinth has a dedication carved in relief, which reads: "PRAY FOR THE SOULS/ OF THE SERVERS AND/ MEMBERS OF THE CHOIR/ AND CONGREGATION OF/ THIS CHURCH WHO DIED/ IN THE GREAT WAR AND/ IN WHOSE MEMORY THIS/ CROSS WAS DEDICATED/ EASTER A D MCMXVIII/ R.I.P." The text on the other faces of the plinth is now illegible due to weathering.
The memorial is set within an octagonal area that is surrounded by planting and stone kerbs.
