Description

Chantry Farm features a pair of linked barns, constructed at right angles to each other, dating from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Both barns are timber-framed and weatherboarded, topped with corrugated iron roofs.

The North-South Barn, from the 16th century, consists of five bays and includes a full-height porch on the west side and a secondary entry on the east side, both located in the middle bay. It showcases good studding with a middle rail, posts with jowled heads, and long, straight or cranked and arched braces to the tie-beams. The roof features clasped purlins and closely spaced principal rafters, with collars and purlins that were partly renewed in the late 17th century. The late 17th-century porch, spanning two bays, has bisected studs set flat, primary braces, and a clasped purlin roof.

The East-West Barn has two bays at the east end and the remains of a third bay, likely dating from the earlier 16th century, which features very good studding with a middle rail, irregular cambered tie-beams, and long arched braces. The third bay has been converted into an entry with a full-height porch on the north side. To the west, three early 18th-century bays have been added, linking this barn with the North-South range. This section includes a middle rail, primary braces with bisected studs, and bolted knees to the straight tie-beams. The roof, renewed at the same time, has clasped purlins, very narrow principals, and a ridge-piece, with some reused rafters.
