Description

Clive Cottage is a house dating primarily to the 16th century, with later alterations. It is timber-framed and rendered, with a thatched roof. A red brick gable was added at the east end at a later date. The house is now organised as three rooms, although the westernmost room is an early 19th century addition. There is an external chimney stack backing onto the red brick gable, with a plain square shaft, and a smaller internal stack with a similar shaft. A wide eyebrow dormer features three 2-light casement windows with a single horizontal bar to each light. Four similar 2-light casement windows are on the ground floor, along with two narrow single-light windows inserted in the mid-20th century on the left and right sides. There are two half-glazed doors. The original two bays of the interior reveal timber framing, including studding (with some replacements) lacking a middle rail, and arched braces extending below ceiling level. The truss between these two bays was cut through at tie-beam level to allow access to the upper floor, and a later studded partition was installed below. The ceiling joists in the bay adjacent to the original stack are large, rough, and widely spaced; those in the other bay are oriented differently, with the joists set on edge and resting on clamps. This suggests the two bays were ceiled over at different times, and implies the interior may have been open originally, although an open hall is unlikely. The gable end fireplace has a plain timber lintel and a surround of Tudor brick.
