Description
Bridewell House is an early 17th-century house, originally a cottage, that has been altered and extended in the mid-19th century and later used as a shop. The house is timber-framed and has a roughcast exterior. It has a steeply pitched pantiled roof. The original plan was for two cells and five bays, with a stack at one end that is now truncated. Two bays have been added to the rear right side. The house has two storeys, with an attic to the front.
The ground floor features a central entrance with a 19th-century door, with shaped brackets supporting a projecting hood. To the left is a projecting former shop front with a tall, architraved three-by-three pane sash window and a cornice. To the right is a 20th-century three-light canted bay window. The first floor has two architraved three-by-three pane sash windows. The right gable end, on the first floor and in the attic, has casement windows. At the rear, there is a two-light dormer and a lean-to outshut with a slate roof.
A 19th-century addition to the rear right side projects slightly and has ground floor casements and tall, architraved glazing bar sash windows on the first floor, with end stacks. The roof extends over a lean-to addition on the inner side.
The interior features close studding, stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, a five-light diamond mullioned window opening, collars to principals clasping purlins, and reverse curved arched windbraces. The building is included for group value.
