Description

Farmhouse. Built in the early 17th century, it was partly cased and altered in the 19th century. The house has a timber frame, with the front faced in brick and then whitewashed and rendered. It has a steeply pitched plain tiled roof. The original layout was a three-cell lobby entry plan, with a three-bay kitchen/dairy wing added to the rear left, forming an 'L' shape. The house is one storey high with an attic. The central right entrance has a recessed 19th-century half-glazed door, and a recessed three-light casement window to the left. A three-light gabled dormer is positioned to the left of the centre. A tall original brick stack projects from the ridge of the roof, located to the right of centre, between the hall and parlour. The gable ends have exposed plates, halved principals, and cambered collars clasping the purlins. An entrance is present in the left end, featuring pentice boards. A slate-roofed lean-to extends from the service bay at the rear. Attached to the rear left corner is the kitchen/dairy wing, which has a gable front, a boarded door, and a shallow-pitched 19th-century roof. The rear elevation features a louvred opening, a two-light casement, and exposed 17th-century plates. The inner return side has a three-light casement and a stable door. Inside, much of the timber frame is hidden, but stop-chamfered axial binding beams and storey posts remain, along with close studding. A newel staircase is located in front of the stack. The first floor has stop-chamfered wall plates, with a raised tie beam between the hall and parlour chambers. The service wing retains the base of a stack and arched braces in the original walling.
