Description

Shrubbery Farmhouse is a 16th-century farmhouse. It is timber-framed with colourwashed render and a plain tile roof, originally thatched. The front of the house has 20th-century windows. A projecting single-storey porch was added in the 20th century, containing a plank door with a small window to the right. Flanking the porch are four-light windows on both the ground and first floors. To the left of the porch are a one-light and a three-light window at each level. A chimney stack with decorative vertical strips and bands rises from the roof ridge to the right of centre. The right-hand side of the front has a blank gable except for a three-light casement window. The left-hand gable has a three-light ground-floor casement window and a three-light window in the gable itself. A lean-to addition with a garage extension projects from the left-hand gable. At the rear of the house, a projecting gabled wing was added in the 20th century; the gable end is blank at ground floor level, but a three-light casement window and a two-light attic window are present. A lead rainwater head dated 1847 is positioned to the right, and to the right again sits the rear of the garage block. The left flank of this wing has a stable door, a four-light window, a three-light window, and three three-light casement windows to the first floor. The rear of the original central range has French windows to the left, a four-light casement to the right, and two four-light casement windows laterally on the first floor, with a single-light casement between them. A gabled dormer window is visible below the chimney stack.

Inside, the hall has chamfered ceiling beams with stepped ogee stops, and chamfered joists with run-out end stops. There are mortice holes showing the line of a former screen, now removed, and a doorway now leading through to the rear wing, aligned with the former screen passage. Near-set close studding is visible. The fireplace has been rebuilt with a 20th-century bressumer. A ceiling beam with mortice holes in another ground-floor room shows the location of a former division between service rooms. An inserted baffle-entry plan includes a renewed 20th-century winder staircase. The first floor has chamfered ceiling beams, joists, and close studding, jowled wall posts with tension bracing, cambered tie beams and collars, and heavy common rafters. The roof comprises seven bays with two sets of purlins.
