Description

The Mercers Hall is a house originally dating from the 15th century, and initially located in Lady Street, Lavenham. It was dismantled in 1908 and reconstructed here around 1920. The building is timber-framed with closely-spaced exposed half-timbering, and has a plaintiled roof. It is two storeys high and comprises three gabled wings; the front gable and the gable on the left-hand side have a jettied first floor, representing the cross-wings of the original house. The front gable features a five-light mullioned oriel window with moulded soffits on both the ground and first floors, with the ground floor window likely replaced. Many of the other windows appear original and all are fitted with diamond-leaded panes. A doorway in the right-hand wing has a modern boarded door and a plaintiled hood. A plastered extension from the early 20th century is located at the rear, incorporating reused timbers to the first floor. Inside, there is substantial exposed timbering, two original doors, a newel staircase, and crown post roofs in the two jettied wings.
