Description

This is a pair of early 19th-century cottages located on College Road, Framlingham. They are built of red brick with brown brick dressings and flint side panels. The roofs are covered in pantiles, with a catslide roof to the rear of one cottage. A central brick stack rises from the ridge. Each cottage originally had a side entrance, with a living room at the front and a scullery to the rear; one has an original outshut wash house at the rear.

The front elevation is symmetrical, featuring a two-window range at the first floor with two-light casement windows. The ground floor has a pair of three-light casement windows, recessed within large arches constructed of brown bricks, which form a decorative element along with the projecting floor band. Flintwork panels flank the ground floor on the sides, each with a plank door. The first floor to the left has a pair of two-light casements, and to the right, a single two-light casement. The rear of the right-hand cottage has a 20th-century single-storey extension, while the left cottage retains an original outshut with a catslide roof.

The interiors feature a small winder staircase, timber-framed partitions to the first floor, and chamfered bridging beams. Original plank doors remain. The roof is mostly original, with added 20th-century rafters. Elements of fireplaces survive, including a small brick open fireplace in the rear outshut.

The cottages survive with little alteration, displaying a carefully designed and decorated front elevation.
